The Power of Productive Struggle: Building Persistence and Problem-Solving in Young Learners

Encouraging productive struggle helps young children build persistence, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills that support lifelong learning. This professional development session introduces the concept of the “groan zone,” where children face manageable challenges and are guided to work through them independently. Through modeling and reflection, providers learn how to balance support and challenge, fostering confidence, independence, and a lasting growth mindset.
